how much does it cost to opeate a flat screen TV?
my dad said we cant afford to buy a flat screen TV because it uses up too much electricity and it will double the electric bill. is this true?
What kind of flat screen TV should we look for if we don’t want to double our electric bill? We do want High Definition picture though and we are thinking of around 42 inches that can be mounted on a wall.

Your dad is being overzealous!
Obviously if you go from a 30" CRT TV to a 65" Plasma TV, you’re going to see a noticeable rise in your electric bill! But it’s not going to be enough to break your dad’s wallet!
However, 42" LCD and Plasma TV are very common size for HDTVs. And most are energy star rated so you don’t have to worry about a significant rise in your electric bill! If there is any rise at all, you probably won’t notice it unless you’re looking for it!
This is a TV that i recommend a lot because it’s made by the most reliable brand of HDTVs i’ve ever seen, as well as it’s an affordable TV that provides an outstanding picture quality! It’s one of the most energy efficient Plasma models made too!
Panasonic 42" 1080p(TC-P42U1): http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasonic+-+VIERA+/+42%22+Class+/+1080p+/+600Hz+/+Plasma+HDTV/9244301.p?id=1218066284214&skuId=9244301
It’s on-mode average energy consumption is rated at 142w. That’ll cost about $2.76 a month at the national average of 12cents per kilowatt hour(some states vary)!
Well Yes, It will probably use twice as more as CRT (w/LCD) and with Plasma Twice as more as LCD! I don’t know about other systems
I run a mac mini connected to a 42" 1080p LCD tv, and other random things around the house and my electricity costs are 6 cents an hour…. (this includes my kitchen light and my front room light)… _AND_ I’ve owned 2 different LCD Tv’s both 42" … One LGLC7D (it was only 780p) and an Insignia 42" 1080p.
It only jumps up when i turn on my stove / AC / Dishwasher / water heater / laundry machines.
(Dont listen to the dude above me… hes clueless.. When i turn on my CRT monitor in my room, it jumps up 3 cents / hour)
LCD and Plasmas are generally more energy efficient than the conventional models(up to 30%). Also considering the average TV use accounts 10% of a household’s annual electricity bill. Even if it did use more energy than an old TV it still would be hard to "double" your bill.
Anyways when buying a TV just make sure it has the Energy Star rating.

Also a side note plasmas generally use more energy than an lcd. But many plasmas are still energy efficient and receive an energy star rating.
